Our boy flies off this morning for his grand adventure at his Marines station. He has turned into quite the incredible young man. Very proud of him. After the airport we take my grandma to the doctor. And then I hope to sleep for several days to recover from the whirlwind of activity over the past few weeks.

Yesterday I washed and cooked two medium size whole pumpkins in the oven at 325 degrees for 1 1/2 hours each. Never tried this way! It was a job, although when finished it produced 20 cups pureed pumpkin for baking. That beats hunting it in the stores, as it has been hard to find! It also tasted good with no seasonings yet. Froze in 2 cup portions. Plus, seeds can be seasoned later and toasted for a healthy optional snack. I cleaned and refrigerated them to prep asap.

That is how I like to do my pumpkins also. My kids love the roasted seeds!

It is a horrible drizzly and overcast day today. One of those days where you just want to pull the curtains and curl up with a good book.

Life is finally starting to slow down. We have been running full blast for a year now. Should be time to buy gifts, but cant seem to get up the gumption. Anyone else having a hard time moving into the holiday spirit?

Life is finally starting to slow down. We have been running full blast for a year now. Should be time to buy gifts, but cant seem to get up the gumption. Anyone else having a hard time moving into the holiday spirit? This year has been a challenge for most everyone. I have been trying to stay positive and thankful regardless of the highs and lows this year has brought. Even still, I must give thanks for the unseen blessings. I believe it has humbled me so that I will survive Christmas and the New Year also, as long as I focus on the true meaning of Christmas and not the marketing part that takes away from the true meaning. If we are warm, clothed, and have a good meal for the Holidays, we are blessed! Remember Jesus is the reason for the Season, we have so much to be thankful for! Utmost we also would love to see our families, friends, relatives and neighbors healthy, safe and blessed, with no hunger, depression, or all alone. Thank God for Angels and unseen blessings! Never give up and give thanks! 🎀🎄🎀

Remember Jesus is the reason for the Season, we have so much to be thankful for! Amen to that!
Certainly, as others have stated, this year feels different. So much of what we're used to doing (e.g. normal things we used to do around the holidays, family traditions, get togethers, etc...) are off the table. Some, because our state has made it rather difficult to gather or go places; others, because many of our friends and family are concerned (which I respect).
What traditions will you miss most this year?
I'll go first. Here in Michigan, we are not far from Frankenmuth, a town known for it's old world German heritage, architecture, and Christmas wonder! For many years, growing up, my parents would take my brothers and I to Bronner's Christmas Wonderland - a Christmas store in Frankenmuth that boasts itself as the World's Largest Christmas store. As a father, it's been a tradition I've continued with my 4 children; my wife and I always take our kids there before Christmas to pick out a new ornament for the tree. It's a sober and sad reality that this year is simply not a year for many of those traditions.
Similarly, since our children were infants, we have always gone to Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad around the holidays. Crossroads Village is a re-enactment village, reassembled from old historical buildings from around the state, which were moved there and put back together, period correct. Huckleberry railroad is a historic railway that operates vintage steam locomotives on a several mile stretch of railroad through Crossroads Village. This will be the first year in many, where my wife, kids, and I will not go for a evening train ride through the Village to enjoy the lights in all of their beauty.
Yet, despite all of this, my family and I have so very much to be thankful for. While COVID did strike our home, only my wife and I got it and our symptoms were mild. We recovered, our children our healthy, we have a roof over our heads, plenty of food to eat (much of it grown ourselves or by local farmers), and through it all, I have stayed employed and able to work from home with those I love most. Sometimes it's the hard times that make us appreciate how truly blessed we are. The Lord has been gracious to us in this time.

Thanks jonathco for sharing the family Christmas traditions your family enjoys and the town and atmosphere you will miss due to co-vid probably. Your inspiration and post are appreciated and enjoyed!
I am a big train fan. My Father worked for the railroad and he instilled a big interest in trains for me at an early age. Yes as a child I loved wearing the blue and white striped hat Dad made sure we all experienced and had due to our love for his job.

Hope everyone had a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. All is well here with snow on the ground and more in the forecast for tomorrow. My husband has put up a bird feeding station outside my window so that I can knit or quilt and watch the birds. I continue to nurse a broken right foot and a torn meniscus in my left knee.
My husband has been going to the doctor also and we are trying to schedule cataract surgery for him. It was on the books and then cancelled due to Covid issues and doctors cancelling elective surgeries. We go back to the doctor at the end of January and hope to slide in and get it done quickly and get out.
We had a quiet Christmas and New Year at home but are thankful we both remain virus free. I have been fighting a lingering cold but better that than Covid.
With Love DD

Snow is just about melted here. O Wise one and I spent the morning in town. He had to go and have a preliminary meeting to have his cataracts removed. Everything went well and we go back on next Wednesday for his surgery on the first eye. We kept putting it off because of Covid but just could not postpone any more. It was just getting too bad. So pray we do not get exposed to the virus.

The temps are in the teens in our area. We had ice last night and surprised to see snow early this morning. Enough to lay but already melting away. Icicles are hanging although not like I remember as a child. Yes, I love snow! A nice surprise to wake up to! For anyone who has water and the temps are low, keep your faucets running with a drip to prevent pipes from bursting, until the temps get in the 30's. God bless you Handmaid and family, I admire you taking care of Grandma! I am concerned for the folks in nursing homes.
If you have a gas stove, it can be turned on and used to access heat from it also. Keep an eye on it although.

Thankfully, the temps are finally climbing back into a manageable range today (mid 20's). Temps had gotten down to -15 a few nights ago. The barn cats were fine with a heat lamp and their box full of bedding. We had also put a heat lamp in the coop temporarily to keep the chickens alive; everyone made it, but we do have one chicken with mild frost-bite on her comb. Michigan isn't the easiest state to spend the winters in, but the Great Lakes certainly are beautiful in the summer!
