This week is focused on getting ready for our eldest to come home from his Marines station before he ships out the end of the month. We are so excited as covid meant we couldn't attend his boot camp graduation last spring. So looks like we will be doing Thanksgiving and Christmas within days of each other. Lol!! So excited.

There is such a fondness when I look out the kitchen window into our tiny backyard ad see the raised garden beds, makeshift greenhouse, and cover crops growing in the beds. I feel like we are old friends now. We went through a lot of hard work with eachother, building the beds, growing food, cleaning the beds up for winter. In a couple months Miss Garden and I will chat about what we feel like growing, where she wants the plants set... I never felt this way when I had a simple, well-groomed yard. Something about a vegetable garden makes it feel solid and grounded, like the yard now works WITH us to provide for the family, instead of being a time-suck as far as upkeep and yardwork. I am happy to give her some restful months, though with the greenhouse and frost cloth I am hoping to practice some with fall/winter growing.
We are still swamped with ripening tomatoes inside. Used some of our sweet potatoes yesterday to make sweet potato cookies from the Nourishing Traditions cookbook.
I wish our society could remember and fall in love again with home life.

So much emphasis these days is put on the accumulation of wealth and possessions that other women actually look down on women who are homemakers. Through out my whole life my faith, my family and my home have been my refuge and salvation. I have gotten such great joy from gardening, providing for my family and keeping my home. I like you wish that many young women could learn that and that we as a society could except, teach and support them along that journey.

Got my first seed catalogs just in time. I had one from Tomato Growers show up yesterday! When do you start deciding what to plant?

Closer to March. I watch my jars and what is getting the lowest is what I need to concentrate on. Then there are some thing I grow every year. A few potatoes, tomatoes, beets, cabbage, squash, onions, sweet peppers, and usually beans peas and greens. The majority of my seeds are saved and then I will treat myself to a couple new flowers or herb packets every year.

Good morning. Life goes on here I continue to hang to this arm chair with my leg elevated mostly. Crutches are a pain. Doing some knitting and catching up on my reading. Family seems to be getting better and recovering from Covid so I am thankful for that. All is well as the world passes outside my front window. We continue to curbside pickup our few grocery needs and isolate at the house to protect ourselves, our community and those that we love.
Stay safe DD

I had never raised it, it is an old seed, I bought some and amazed how much bigger they grow before growing tough.

Cowhorn okra is my favorite. Like you pointed out it remains soft even when getting large. The bad side is it grows so tall you may need a laddet to pick it. Tip cut out the top (growing tip) and it will branch out and make more okra.

I think I posted this in the wrong place before, but I'll figure it out! Anybody else on here use an Instant Pot? I mean, REALLY use it? My husband came inside right before lunch and hijacked me to help him worm all our sheep. Yikes! Got back inside about 1:30 and in less than 30 minutes had a codfish stew ready. Thunderstorms all around gave us nice, cool breezes for our work, a welcome change from our normal 90+ degree weather in July in SC. I recently broke out a gifted Instant Pot 8 quart Lux, gifted to me by my son and his family 2 Christmases ago. Yes, I was intimidated by it! Luckily I had gifted one to my daughter last year and she helped me set it up and give me her experiences with her adventures using it, with advice. So far I have cooked a beef chuck roast with vegetables in beef broth, chili and also the best butter beans with smoked ham pieces. It has won my vote, I should have made use of it way before now! A good investment for any cook. Easy to clean also!

Two inches of snow overnight here. Husband put up the bird feeder and suet cakes right outside my window so that I can watch the birds.

Sweet of your husband to do this for you! I enjoy bird watching and the feeder and suet should provide a variety of birds for you to view! A small kindness, when your down and unable, it really means a lot! Stay strong, in heart, and allow your feet to rest. You will be up and going hopefully soon! 👣
