Hi Folks,
As everyone knows, canning supplies are in high demand these days, and when you can find them, the prices are downright ridiculous. The Mrs. and I are good on jars and rings, but we likely don't have enough lids to get us through this year's garden (we have some, but not enough). I avoid the off-brand lids and stick with Ball/Kerr typically. On ebay, I've been able to find a few cases of lids, but the prices are averaging $0.50 a lid! While I may have to go that route (and will pay that price to secure what I need), before I do, I was curious if anyone has ever used Tattler Lids? They also average about $0.50 each, but are re-usable. I know a few folks that swear by them. Anybody on here every try them?
Thanks!

We ended up ordering some Kerr lids at around 50 cents a piece, but certainly hope the prices come down soon. I'd still be interested in knowing if anyone has used Tattler lids or not, though.

I bought some Harvest Guard lids. Still have yet to use them. Will let you know! A lot of people love Tattlers!

I am too independent, I think. I cringe every time I open a jar I canned, because I HATE throwing out the single use lids! It is actually a mental hinderance to even using the canned goods. I think that is the biggest draw for me towards the Tattlers and HG lids. Multiple uses, with only random repurchasing of the rubber gaskets.
Also, with the push from nosy businesses to track and analyze people's spending habits, knowing I can keep some of our stuff private and not some much a commodity for others to evaluate and profit from is invaluable for me. Lol

Lol Oh goodness, I hadn't even thought of the benefits from that angle! I may give Tattlers a go next time around.

I ordered some Harvest Guard today. With the shortage not going anywhere it seems now is the time. Especially since I can buy reusable for cheaper than the price gougers on regular out there. They are backlogged on shipping 3-4 weeks, but I figure I'm ordering early enough in season it should work out ok. If anyone has any opinions on reusable canning lids I would love to hear them.

So I used the Tattlers for the first time yesterday. Canned 8 pints of grape jelly. Figured it wasn't a big risk to try it out on a cheap jelly.
Results were 5 of the 8 sealed. One came out of the canner and the screw lid immediately popped everything off. Ugh. So I screw them all down tight again just as an experiment. That jar was sealed by tonight, however since it opened after the canning I am gonna out it in the fridge. So while 5 of the 8 sealed, it was actually 4 of 8 that were legitimate.
Not sure what I did wrong. Tightened to fingertip tightness (where it spins on the counter) after filling. Had wiped the rim clean with a wet cloth. And then after removing from the canner, I waited a couple minutes like the instructions said, and then tightened them completely. Didnt test the seals till tonight.
Any ideas? Should I wipe the rim with vinegar instead? Tighten immediately from the canner instead of waiting a couple minutes?

You know I remember reading somewhere else that people struggle with water bath canning with Tattler and that pressure canning tends to be more successful. I have no idea I have only pressure canned with them. Maybe do some experimenting with water in jars and see what works.

I"m still waiting for my order from may- they've been on back order since before then apparently. Thankfully I've still had plenty of regular lids this year. I managed to find a bunch before the season started.

So to follow up to my prior post, I canned steam canned 10 pints of tomato sauce two days ago. Zero seal failures. There were several things I changed this time.
First, I saw a video where the canner said if you have a lot of seal failures to check the edges of the plastic lip. Her suggestion was to check for plastic burrs which could catch on the metal ring when you check the finished project and accidentally pop the lid. So I did a thorough check. My regular sized Tattler lids were fine, but nearly every one of my wide mouth ones had definite burrs. So I trimmed those off with a box cutter.
The second thing I changed was I wiped the jar lip with vinegar instead of a damp cloth.
Thirdly, instead of boiling the lids and rubber rings this time, I poured boiling water over them in a bowl and left them there.
Finally, after the canner did the five minute wait after finishing the processing time, I removed each jar and nearly immediated tightened the metal ring.
Frankly I dont know which thing helped the most, however I KNOW there would have been failures if I had not resolved the burr problem. Some of the burrs were prominent.

I did a batch of peas last night and waiting on them to cool to check on my seal rate. I am canning several batches of green beans today with them. Wish me luck!
Also*****I will definitely be checking for burrs also and thanks for that heads up.

19 quarts of green beans and 9 quarts of purple hulls all sealed. I actually think I may have this reusable lid thing figured out !

Yesterday I braved pressure canning with the Tattler lids. I felt carrots were a safe experiment, so I did half with Tattlers and half with regular lids. One of each kind failed to seal. That was better results than I was expecting. However, I tend to leave the Tattler canned goods on the counter for 48 hrs just to repeatedly check the seal. I found one of my blackberry jams with Tattler lid unsealed in the pantry. It had a verified seal when I put it there. Not sure what happened.

I had one lid not seal in the very first batch that I used but after I got the hang of it they all sealed after that. However, like you the other day one of my green bean jars became unsealed in the pantry. It was firmly sealed when I placed it there. I will say that I occasionally have had a traditional Ball lid come unsealed also. Not very often but it has happened.
