I'm new to this board and new to growing sweet onions, so please bear with me. We are growing sweet Vidalia onions in an elevated raised bed. Something is eating the green tops of my very young onions. I found one teeny black slug or something like that on one plant the other day. But it keeps happening every so often. I don't want to lose my onions, I love them too much lol. Any ideas what's eating on them and/or what to do about this pest situation? The green tops are only about one inch to three inches or so high right now. Thanks so very much.

Thank you DirtDiva. So I had read somewhere that coffee grounds spread around the onion seedlings would keep the slugs at bay - wrong. Went out this morning and they had a feast again. It's been too wet here in south Mississippi to put down Diatomaceous Earth so I'm at a loss about what I can do to get rid of the slugs. The slug I found the other day was so small that you could have mistaken him for a piece of dirt. Any ideas or suggestions on how to rid my precious onion plants of these slugs ? thanks so much!

Beer traps. you can google them online. They are pretty simple just placing dishes of beer to attract and drown them. I personally cannot use them because my dog loves beer Thus I have ducks. They also make slug baits that work pretty well. Just be careful if you have pets.

Welcome Green Acre Gardener, slugs are more noticeable in my region area this year, best wishes in saving those onions!
