We have a small backyard, and we dont know how much longer we will live on this property. The is one fence where I could grow several fruit trees if I did it the more pruned way, i.e. cordoned and/or espaliered. Does anyone have any experience with this? Would trees produce more quickly this way?

I see lots of pictures of espaliered trees and love the idea but have no experience at all with the technique.

Been debating for months now on fruit trees. The main issues were location and how long we would be at this property. This week while pulling the tomato plants and tidying up the garden beds, I saw something with new eyes. Funny how that happens. Last year we had bought some bare root elderberry trees and plopped them into a couple 55 gallon drums which we had cut in half. In essence, 27 gallon containers. The elderberries were growing well. And I realized we still had quite a few half drums left which had housed the squash plants this year. Voila! We decided to go ahead with the apple trees and pot them into those containers. When we move, we can just take them with us. That will probably be in a year or two, well before they would be producing anything. I also ordered a couple blueberry plants as the ones we have just wont produce anything at all. I am gonna pot those into the larger containers as well and hope for the best. In the meantime, I feel better knowing we will have healthier options than what the stores will provide, shortages aside.
