For those who keep chickens- what type of bedding do you use? I use pine shavings but my brother uses sand. Just curious what others use/like.

I use a mixture of pine shavings and straw in the house. I also throw straw in the run if it gets muddy just to keep it from getting slick.

We use pine shavings in our coop, and then pile the "spent" shavings and manure under a large tarp, to be used in the garden once composted.
I've never heard of using sand; interesting concept. What's your brother's rationale behind sand; does it work better?

He uses shavings or straw in the nesting boxes/house- but uses sand in the run. He's got a covered concrete pad, with sand on top of that. I think initially it was because he had some on hand- but he says its easier to keep clean the coop clean- that it dries out the poop quicker, scoops it out like a litter box when needed. And only has to be changed about once a year.
Personally, my allergies can't handle wet straw so I stick with the pine shavings.

That's a fascinating idea (using sand). I stick with pine shavings simply because the local feed store sells it and saves me from having to make an extra trip to the farmer on the other end of town who sells straw. I even use pine shavings in my nesting boxes!
