I wanted to share a good experience over Christmas. I have had many Christmas trees through the years but this year I tried something different. O Wise One and I purchased a 3 foot blue cypress from the garden center back in the summer in a large pot. It had a beautiful shape and we left it in the pot under a tree in the yard until about a week before Christmas. Then we hosed it down to clean out any critters and moved it inside as a Christmas tree. Decorated it and it was beautiful. After Christmas we simply undecorated and took it out to the yard and planted it. We are thinking to make this a yearly tradition in an attempt to get away from artificial and add some evergreen trees to our landscape for the birds and our own enjoyment.
We watered it every other day and it's stay in the house was short in order to not break dormancy.

The other thing I wanted to talk to you all about is flower seed planting. I have had great success with planting perennial flowers from seeds in jugs. Now is the time to plant them. They stay outside in jugs and come up at the appropriate time on their own schedule. Kind of like self sowing in jugs. Many seeds benefit from going through the cold of winter and the seeds lay dormant until the ground warms to the proper temperature. No artificial light etc. I also now start my onions and vegetables in jugs as well just later. I honestly think it makes for stronger plants. You can find lots online under winter sowing.

I am trying a new variety of okra this year called "Heavy Hitter". Anybody else out there tried it? I've not tried that variety before, but a quick web search has me now interested in giving it a whirl. Clemson Spinless and Red Burgundy are my "go to" varieties most of the time. Red Burgundy is beautiful but does not produce nearly as well as Clemson. Keep us posted on how Heavy Hitter does (taste, production, plant health) - I'll be interested to see how it performs for you.

Making compost piles today for hot compost. Cleaning out the chicken house straw and duck house straw and then adding lots of additions. Grass clippings, plant trimmings from the iris and peony plants that need deadheading. I have been using the Berkeley method and while somewhat labor intensive due to having to turn I love the quick outcome.
Also on my to do list is to paint the woodshed and touch up the paint on the rail fence and clothes line posts.

Rain today so no painting for me today. Geez! I'm just devastated. I got 6 piles of compost made yesterday and the chicken house, duck house and the run cleaned out and new straw put in. I also pruned the blackberry runners, fig sprouts, Nanking cherries where there was frost damage. Guess I will do laundry today. Pork roast in the crock pot.

Turned the compost this morning. Planted green beans and more squash and zucchini. Planted fall cabbage seeds yesterday. Topping iris blooms and peonies still. Want to get my melons, okra and more peas and mustard greens planted this week.

Planted 8 bell pepper plants yesterday in the boxes and also had to replant a couple hills of yellow squash that didn't come up. Tied up tomatoes and cucumbers to wire fences. All the boxes are weeded again. Compost piles are looking good and I hope to have them ready by the first of July. Already collecting stuff for the next batch of hot piles. Sprayed a few lone potato bugs on the tomatoes of all things. (No potatoes)

I planted my green beans on May 2. Ky Wonder pole bean. They are good and green and climbing but no beans yet. Do you think something isn't right?

Temperature today was 64 and what a beautiful day it was although a little breezy. Pruned 12 blueberry bushes. Did a little more pruning on the gooseberries. Pruned pears, black currants, Nanking cherries, peach and plum trees. Planted potatoes that had sprouted in storage. Turned a couple compost piles for the first time this year. Also pulled a few weeds. Would have loved to get all my trimmings burned but there is a burn ban on today so no permit. I also stuck out 12 black currant cuttings. Felt good to get back out there!

Silly me. I forgot that I bought a ton of bulk greens seeds for sprouting several years ago. Germination could be iffy at this point. Walking on the wild side. Went ahead and soaked some, and doing day 2 of rinsing today.
I really need to get moving on garden planning. But hey! For the first time in years I did a menu plan for March!

Green peas are sprouting, garlic is greening up, greens both mustard and turnip are coming up. Onion sets I planted the other day are greening up and putting out. Here we go on the start of the garden for 2022.
