I'm Valerie. I live in southern middle TN. I grew up with parents that gardened and canned and have attempted to get back to doing the same, but, life gets in the way sometimes for a single parent but the spark for self sustainability is still there. My 3 children are all grown now so its time to get back to me. Several years ago I purchased part of my grandparents farm. I live in their old home on five acres. I've had a couple of vegetable gardens since being here but as I mentioned life gets in the way sometimes (at one point I was driving an hour one way to get to my job...not a good combination...gardening, canning and driving 10 hrs a week). I'm now back working close to home....actually working from home now due to Covid. I did not have a vegetable garden this year but I have started a flower farm so I'm super excited to see how that goes. I plan to incorporate vegetables and herbs next year so that I can do some food preserving...canning, dehydrating, freezing, etc. I have been following Hickery Holler for several years now and was excited to see CQ posting again. I have used her advice in putting away my vegetables and even made one of her pickle relish recipes for canning...it was YUMMY by the way. I'm excited to explore the forum and meet new folks. See ya round Val

Hi Handmaid, The flower farm has been a little bit of a slow go because this last spring I was finishing graduate school (and working full time). I did grow flowers and sold a little bit but didn't push myself since I was basically starting mid summer. I had gotten my feet wet in flower farming a little the summer before but thought I'd just grow and get some practice this year and figure out what I need to do and what works for me. I'm super excited for next year since school is out of the way. I'm still working on getting garden beds ready for spring/summer (I'm moving annuals beds to a new spot) and cleaning up perennial beds. I'm excited about it. I'd like for flower farming to be my full time job/income but that will take several years to get to that point....if ever. Who knows, it might happen, it might not...BUT I'M GONNA TRY It's hard work but I'll take it over sitting at a desk all day any day. I've not had a chance to read about everyone else yet but am excited to meet a new group of people. Val

It made it feel so much more homey and welcoming; like growing something simply because it was beautiful and not because it was necessary. And not having to buys flowers for the house? Lol. Something so simple, but I am such a practical person that practicality wins out more often than not. I admire your vision and look forward to hearing all about your plans and dreams.
