Several years back I decided to turn my garden into an orchard. I planted canning pears, eating pears (Bosc and Bartlett), Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, and a Crab apple tree. I have a couple of peach trees, two different type plums, a pecan, catawba grapes, scuppernongs and muscadines. This year I am struggling to grow a brown turkey fig which I love and want so much. Hopefully this one will survive! I also have a blueberry bush and thornless blackberries. The woods were full of wild blackberries and I picked them too!!!
Update: Picked the last of the muscadines and scuppernongs today! They are very sweet and great healthy snack.

I have quite a few fruit trees and bushes planted throughout the property. I have 6 Chicago Hardy figs. Last year I got quite a few figs but last winter took it's toll and even wrapped and protected they froze back to the ground. They have come back though.

How cool! What kind of planning did you ladies do before actually planting? I still have some bush/tree type plants in pots. But our limited back yard and resale of the house in the next year or so make me histant to plant them.

I planned this orchard for items I like to bake and can with. Also to leave fruit trees for children and grandchildren for future fruits. I figure I will do pear preserves, hand pies, jams, jellies and chutney etc... I failed to mention we have a persimmon tree and choke cherry tree also. These two are old trees. I have a choke cherry jelly recipe for canning but the persimmon I need to learn some ways to make use of it's fruit. Make sure the trees have room to grow and spread out.
