My garden was cleared off by the Mr. although not so thorough to dig the taters! So...brother and I broke out the old manual hand plough and I opened the tater rows. Found about 5 lbs. small Idaho and a few sweet potatoes. I knew something had to be there although I have read where potatoes were not growing large lately and turned to be true when dug up. Oh well...it was an adventure for us to learn and brother enjoyed watching me try! 😅

We have in the past. Our potato gardening is on a much smaller scale now and we do not use heavy machinery anymore. Everything is raised beds and no till now. Sold the green tractor of old and the tiller.

That is fascinating! Any photos of you guys using it? No...My brother will be 61 next month and has downs syndrome. I pushed the plough, your right though, I should get a picture of it since it is very old. Hand plough has been here to access as long as I can remember! I also have a tiller but did not use it and it needs a new spark plug to bring it back to life. I have used the tiller in past years and turned out the largest red potatoes I have seen in the large gardens of the past.

So neat that you have a brother with Down's Syndrome. My kid brother had it as well. Sadly we lost him in his early thirties. He was such a special man and I think of him often. His birthday was just last week as a matter of fact.

His birthday was just last week as a matter of fact. I have learned that down syndrome children usually have other health problems than just the downs syndrome. My brother was diagnosed with a hole in between the heart chambers, with this since birth, and we were unaware until test run to check his heart. I have not agreed to surgery due to a past surgery caused a light heart attack and I am afraid surgery could be worse on him than help. I have only met one other person with down syndrome that lived to his 60's. We are blessed to have him with us. A hard decision to face going forward. I struggle with the decision I chose.

My brother had health issues from birth with an intestinal blockage and 2 corrective surgeries before he was 6 months old. He had to have a liver transplant at 18 and died in his early thirties. He suffered greatly but was truly loved and happy but once both my parents passed I believe he simply grieved himself to death. I have lost 2 brothers now and have 2 remaining.

My heartfelt condolences for the humbling loss and experience and love of a brother with these disabilities. I have seen many down syndrome grieve and pass soon after the loss of their parents. A challenge for me surely as it now has been over 9 years since our last parent passed. He also has diverticulitis and the surgery he went through was to untwine his intestines. I have been with him since birth and think that helped him survive this long and I love him to the moon and back, as I do the Mr. Lol, which has been understanding and God sent! Thanks for sharing as this may help others understand also having a similar situation.

Sold the green tractor of old and the tiller. I am considering with my Mr. to make raised gardens also, or otherwise we will soon replenish the garden with rich dark topsoil, as the land here is quite rocky and in need of increased soil, as has been needed in the past to have gardens that flourished.

Yeah I love my raised beds and have to replace the wood about every 5 years. I try to keep the soil in them very fertile. Our native soil is very sandy and acidic and not very fertile. I have areas of garden that are native soil but require constant feeding of compost and amendments. Those are the areas that I plant things like beans and okra that will do good in marginal soils. I save my beds for things that require a better soil.
