I grew up being told to look at the skins on your tomatoes, from your area, to learn what type of winter, weather wise, to be aware of. If the tomato skin was thick, winter would be harsh. Should the tomato skins be thin, winter weather would be mild. Just began my tomato canning and the tomato skins are thin. So hopefully for the southern states we possibly are having a mild winter.
There is also a method to learn by cutting into a persimmon seed. If you see a fork, in the center of the seed, winter is mild. If you see a spoon, winter will be cold and snow probably. If you see a knife, frigid, very cold, harsh winter should be expected.
Please share any folklore traditions, passed down from your family or learned through life, that holds value to you that you would like to share. We would love to hear and learn through other handed down folklore tradition stories!!!
Just sawed (lol) into a persimmon seed and found a spoon! Tomorrow is the first day of Autumn/Fall so maybe snow will be seen somewhere nearby this winter in the south.

You know those big black fuzzy caterpillars you see crawling around in the Fall? We call them wooly worms. The thicker the wool/more fuzzy the harder the winter.

Another sign for a cold winter is an over abundance of acorns on an oak tree.

Another way to know winter is near, one of the first thing to notice die off is poison ivy.

Squirrels gathering nuts in a flurry, Will cause snow to gather in a hurry.
a tough winter is ahead if squirrels’ tails are very bushy
See how high the hornet’s nest, ‘twill tell how high the snow will rest.
A narrow band of brown on a woolly caterpillar means the same thing.
Onion’s skin very thin,
Mild winter coming in ;
Onion’s skin thick and rough,
Coming winter cold and rough.
–Gardener’s Rhyme
Signs of a bad winter: Flowers blooming in late autumn
Cornhusks thicker than normal and tight
Apple skins are tough
Berries and nuts are plentiful (That might be why the squirrels are so busy!)
